Warm or Cold Weather?

As we close in on December starting, it is obviously getting cold. We have been somewhat lucky with our weather this fall, as it hasn't been too cold and we have really gotten much rain. But I personally am not looking forward to the dreaded winter weather that we get here in Slippery Rock. As a baseball player, I see snow and it makes me cringe. As an outdoor lover, I see snow and want to take my dogs and go play in the snow. The worst part about the weather that we get is the one day in the middle of February that comes close to touching 70 degrees and then three days later, its 18 degrees and a blizzard. It really grinds my gears when Mother Nature can't make up her mind whether she's going to let me play baseball or force me to stay bundled up!

Sports in Physical Education - Good or Bad?

I have grown up playing numerous different sports and it has given me many different qualities. Sports teaches people discipline, teamwork, physical skills and more. But what about those kids who don't enjoy sports? Is it okay to force them to play sports in Physical Education class? I personally don't think sports should be forced on anyone, but I do think that they should be encouraged. Although I do not believe sports all day, everyday should be an acceptable way to teach a class, but I do think that teachers should designate a certain amount of time for students to learn and play sports, with the appropriate amount of physical activity. If a teacher is considering a sports unit, I believe they need to focus on the standards and teaching the students something, other than just saying, "Okay, today we are playing sports!"

Wheelchair Basketball

Do you ever get bored of the same kind of physical activity everyday? Well then you definitely need to try wheelchair basketball. Tonight, my team had a game and we had a blast. Basketball isn't really my sport, but wheelchair basketball is a different story. I like it because it levels the playing field of talent, because not many people practice playing basketball while they are sitting in a chair. Not only is it fun and a great new way to get physically active, but it teaches people about a popular Paralympic sport. It also helps when your team is 4-0 and the #1 seed going into the playoffs!

Time for a break!

As the semester is winding down, the holiday season is now here...and finals season! This has definitely been a productive semester for me. I had a lot of ups and downs this semester, in terms of learning how to be a quality teacher. I have learned that it takes a lot, mentally, to be as productive as I was. That being said, it is time for Thanksgiving break! I will be traveling back and forth across the state for this break, and for the first time, I will be spending Thanksgiving away from my family. I am looking forward to this break to mentally regroup my thoughts and mindset so that I can come back and end the semester strong!
